Belgium is well known for its sumptuous castles and rich culture, and traveling through it can make you feel like you're going back in time. The former home of baroque painter Pieter Paul Rubens is located in Antwerp (45 km), and the surroundings of Brussels boast no less than 15 castles. By renting a car in Zaventem, you can enjoy local wonders as well as others nearby, such as the Château de Rhode-Saint-Pierre or the Château de Beersel.
From Zaventem, Mons (65 km) and Liège (99 km) are also very close.
Science and technology are integral parts of the Belgian economic fabric. On the outskirts of Brussels is the Atomium, a 100-meter-high stainless steel structure built for the 1958 World's Fair and a replica of an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times. The structure has now become a museum, and its highest sphere houses a restaurant offering a panoramic view of the city, while the other spheres host temporary scientific exhibitions. According to CNN, the most intriguing building in Europe, it will make for an interesting family day out.
Just a 20-minute drive away is the Château de Beersel, along the E19. Built from 1300 to 1310, it is one of the castles built on the outskirts of Brussels to protect it. Fully restored in 2003, it is now open to visitors from March to the end of November. Stroll through its lush gardens and along the moats, and let yourself be charmed by this unique remnant of medieval history.
